Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Henry J. and Frieda Neils in Minneapolis, this house emerged from close collaboration between architect and clients beginning in 1949. A late example of Wright’s Usonian work, it reflects his effort to create affordable, beautiful housing while also adapting to the Neils’ knowledge and businesses. The house is unique among Wright’s designs for its marble walls, made from leftover blocks Henry Neils secured at low cost, and for its aluminum window frames produced by his company. Its one-story L-shaped plan carefully separates active and private spaces, giving the residence a distinctive place among Wright’s homes.
