Fuquay Consolidated School received funding from the Rosenwald Fund in 1918, and its first class was held the following year. Built on the four teacher plan, it was among the first schools to benefit under the Rosenwald Foundation, a collaboration between Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald that helped improve the education of black students. North Carolina had 817 Rosenwald buildings. A high school building was added in 1952. Its principals included Mr. Joseph S. Davis, the first principal, until 1946; Prof. D.A. Thomas from 1946 to 1950; Mr. William M. McElrath from 1950 to 1953; Mr. Willie M. McLean from 1953 to 1965; and Dr. William Freeman from 1965 to 1970. High school graduations were held there from 1952 to 1970.
