Woodson Mountain near Poway in Southern California is known today as a hiking destination centered on Potato Chip Rock, a narrow outcrop just below the summit whose social media fame surged in the 2010s. Yet the mountain also carries a deeper history. The Kumeyaay knew it as Ewiiy Hellyaa, or the “Mountain of the Moonlit Rocks,” and regarded it as a place of power linked to the Moon, a mythical rabbit, and the spirit giant Toyapai. Later called Cobbleback Peak by pioneers, it was renamed for Dr. Marshall Clay Woodson, who moved to the area in 1895.
