Nauvoo State Park is a 148-acre Illinois park near the Mississippi River that blends recreation with a compact view of Nauvoo’s diverse history. Its features include Lake Horton for fishing and boating, trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, native wildlife, the Rheinberger House Museum, and what is identified as Illinois’ oldest vineyard. The museum occupies a house built by Mormons in the 1840s, later remodeled by Icarians and owned by the Rheinberger family from 1850 to 1948. Staffed by the Nauvoo Historical Society since 1954, it preserves a wine cellar and press room at the site of Nauvoo’s first vineyard and displays artifacts spanning Native American, German, Mormon, Icarian, and Civil War history.
