Breaux Bridge has a long, rich, and proud military heritage and has given generously to the nation through its men and women, many of whom were decorated for bravery, some of whom achieved positions of great responsibility, and many of whom gave their lives in service. That contribution continued on 28 December 1959, when, by authority of the Secretary of the Army and with the consent of the Governor of Louisiana, three Army National Guard Special Forces detachments were activated in Baton Rouge, Breaux Bridge, and New Orleans. A select group of highly skilled and motivated veterans from the Breaux Bridge area then became part of the U.S. Army's elite forces, the Green Berets. From this initial cadre of officers and men, through careful selection and rigorous training, a small but highly capable force was created and qualified to conduct warfare by unconventional means and methods. As a component of the 20th Special Forces Group (ABN), this detachment trained in several domestic and foreign areas, proudly proclaimed Breaux Bridge as its home, and remained there until its deactivation on 1 September 1972. The service also honors those who have served, now serve, and will serve in the future as members of the U.S. Special Operations Command, whose mission is to provide fully capable Special Operations Forces to defend the United States and its interests and to synchronize planning of global operations against terrorist networks.
