Bald Eagle State Forest spans central Pennsylvania across Centre, Clinton, Mifflin, Snyder, and Union counties, linking with Rothrock and Tiadaghton state forests. Its history reflects Pennsylvania’s recovery from severe nineteenth-century deforestation, when lumbering, iron production, and fires sparked by steam locomotives left vast damaged woodland unable to regrow easily. Public concern over that destruction helped create the state forest system, aided by Dr. Joseph Rothrock and legislation in 1897 that allowed the state to buy damaged lands for forest reservations. Today the forest is both protected landscape and recreation destination, with extensive shared-use trails, natural areas, state parks, and major outdoor events.
