Major General Frederick Steele commanded the Department of Arkansas and the Seventh Corps, with an escort from the Third Illinois Cavalry, Company D, and the Fifteenth Illinois Cavalry, Company H. Brigadier General Frederick C. Salomon commanded the Third Division with three brigades and artillery: Brigadier General Samuel Allen Rice's First Brigade included the Fiftieth Indiana, Twenty-ninth Iowa, Thirty-third Iowa, and Ninth Wisconsin; Colonel William E. McLean's Second Brigade included the Forty-third Indiana, Thirty-sixth Iowa, and Seventy-seventh Ohio; and Colonel Adolph Englemann's Third Brigade included the Forty-third Illinois, Fortieth Iowa, and Twenty-seventh Wisconsin. The artillery included Vaughn's Illinois Battery, Battery E of the Second Missouri Light Artillery, and Voegel's Wisconsin Battery. Brigadier General John Milton Thayer commanded the Frontier Division, whose three brigades came from Fort Smith to join Steele near Elkins' Ferry: Colonel John Edwards's First Brigade included the First Arkansas, Second Arkansas with eight companies, Eighteenth Iowa, and Second Indiana Battery; Colonel Charles W. Adams's Second Brigade included the First Kansas (Colored), Second Kansas (Colored), Twelfth Kansas, and First Arkansas Battery; and Colonel Owen Bassett's Third Brigade included the Second Kansas Cavalry, Eighth Kansas Cavalry, and Fourteenth Kansas Cavalry. Brigadier General Eugene Asa Carr commanded the Cavalry Division, which had three brigades but only two at the Battle of Prairie D'Ane: Colonel John F. Ritter's First Brigade included the Third Arkansas Cavalry with four companies, the Thirteenth Illinois Cavalry detachment, the Third Iowa Cavalry detachment, the First Missouri Cavalry with eight companies, and the Second Missouri Cavalry; and Colonel Daniel Anderson's Second Brigade included the Tenth Illinois Cavalry detachment, the First Iowa Cavalry, and the Third Missouri Cavalry. Colonel Powell Clayton commanded an Independent Cavalry Brigade of mixed units at Pine Bluff that aided Steele during the expedition by creating distractions, monitoring Confederate activities along the Saline River, and attacking and repelling Confederate forces, though not at Prairie D'Ane; its units included the First Indiana Cavalry with eight companies, Fifth Kansas Cavalry, Seventh Missouri Cavalry, Eighteenth Illinois, Twenty-eighth Wisconsin, and First Indiana Battery.
