Maine’s official state museum in Augusta brings together the state’s prehistory, history, and natural science in one place, with exhibits on wildlife, plant communities, gems and minerals, archaeology, settlement, and industries such as forestry, granite, fishing, and agriculture. A distinctive feature is a working three-story, water-powered woodworking mill with craftsmen’s work areas that connect industrial production to everyday labor. The museum also became part of a notable public-history episode when, in 2013, it agreed to display the labor history mural removed from the Maine Department of Labor in 2011 under Governor Paul LePage, while the department retained ownership under a renewable three-year loan.
