A hotel and stagecoach relay station stood halfway between Murphys and Big Trees. The place was settled in the 1850’s by Joseph and Sarah Goodell, then purchased by Peter Avery and operated by three generations of Averys: Peter and Nancy, George and Henrietta, and Morton and Louise. It served as an overnight stop for logging and freight teams and for stockmen moving herds to and from summer ranges, and later became a resort for guests and for hunting and fishing parties.
