Near this site, John McCulloch erected the first permanent cabin in the county in 1844. He sold it in 1852, went to California, and died on the plains in 1853. On September 4, 1848, a Democratic nominating convention for Crawford County delegates was held here, with delegates from Prairie du Chien, Round Prairie, Prairie La Crosse, Black River, and Black River Falls. The chairman was Gen. Spencer and the secretary was Wm. T. Price. The nominees were Jas. Fisher for 1st State Senate, Jas. O'Neill for Assembly, I. B. Brunson for sheriff, and Wiram Knowlton, Wm. T. Sterling, and Jacob Spaulding as delegates to the 1st State Convention.
