On November 28, 1803, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark arrived in Kaskaskia with about twenty-four men. There they recruited twelve more soldiers from the local fort, including Patrick Gass and John Ordway, obtained a second pirogue, hired French boatmen to help move their boats up river, and hired an additional interpreter, Francois Labiche.
