In 1854, stones quarried in Chalk Creek and hauled by oxen were used in the foundation of a two-storied 30 x 40 adobe church building in the Pioneer Fort one half block east of Main Street. After being remodeled into a single 30 x 60 hall with an oval ceiling, it was used for church and school until 1900, then became the Relief Society home for nine years. It later served many different purposes, and in 1915 it was sold to Roy and Mary A. Dame.
