South Leon Baptist Church was the first Baptist church formed in Comanche County. It was organized in 1857 by the Rev. Richard Howard and eight charter members under a brush arbor built here. Early services were held in a log schoolhouse 300 feet west, and a later combination church-school was built near the cemetery. The church was dissolved in 1859 because of Indian troubles, then reorganized in 1872 with James Cunningham and F. H. Neely as deacons. The present building was erected in 1906.
