At the Battle of Chippawa on 5 July 1814, soldiers of the Left Division of the United States Army, soldiers of the Right Division of the British Army in North America, and First Nations warriors allied with Britain and with the United States fought on this ground. Many who fought here are buried nearby. The United States forces included the Regiment of United States Light Dragoons, Major Jacob Hindman's Battalion of the United States Corp of Artillery, the 9th, 11th, 17th, 19th, 22nd, 23rd, and 25th United States Infantry Regiments, and the 5th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment. The British forces included the 19th Regiment of Light Dragoons, Captain James Maclachlan's Company of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, the 1st Battalion of the 1st Royal Scots Regiment of Foot, the 1st Battalion of the 8th King's Regiment of Foot, the 100th Prince Regent's County of Dublin Regiment of Foot, the Troop of Provincial Royal Artillery Drivers, and the 2nd Lincoln Regiment, Militia of Upper Canada from the Niagara Peninsula, which at Chippawa suffered the highest casualties lost by a Canadian militia unit in a single engagement during the War of 1812. Peace has prevailed between Canada and the United States since that time.
