Beaumont Rice Mill, founded in 1892 by J. E. Broussard, developed after the first commercial planting of rice in Texas in 1863. Earlier crops, because they depended on rain, were called “providence rice.” Broussard, a pioneer grower and irrigator, was also co-founder of the Rice Millers' Association. His efforts caused factories to spring up in nearby counties. The firm is still operated by his descendants. The present building was erected in 1907.
