In the Chesapeake Bay region, Eastern Woodland people lived in Native American villages before Europeans settled there, in a world unlike Hollywood stereotypes, with no horses in the region and no large feather headdresses. A re-created village evokes the time when European settlers first arrived and the Patuxent people lived along the Patuxent River. When Captain John Smith sailed up the river in August 1608, he recorded that the people called Acquintanacsuck, Pawtuxant, and Matiapament lived upon it and inhabited together, not as dispersed as others. The changing landscape and a closer experience of individual lifeways offer a fuller understanding of this past.
