Bellingrath Gardens and Home
Nature
Bellingrath Gardens and Home, on the Fowl River near Mobile, Alabama, grew from Walter Bellingrath’s 1917 fishing camp into a major public garden estate shaped largely by Bessie Bellingrath and architect George Bigelow Rogers beginning in 1927. Opened to the public in 1932, the site centers on a 65-acre garden and a house completed in 1935 that blends several architectural traditions and preserves original furnishings. Built with wealth from Walter Bellingrath’s Coca-Cola bottling business, the estate is known for year-round plantings, including vast seasonal displays, and for Magic Christmas in Lights. It remains a historic house museum and one of Alabama’s best-known public gardens.
