Fifty-four Titan I missiles were divided into six squadrons during their deployment. Each squadron consisted of three launch complexes, and each complex housed three missiles in hardened silos. Each launch complex was buried deep underground, with all facilities within it connected by 2,500 feet of steel passageways forty feet below the ground. Once the launch sequence was initiated, one of the three Titan I missiles at the complex was fueled in its silo, carried to the surface by an elevator, and then launched.
