Frederick Douglass, African-American orator and abolitionist, spoke here on June 6, 1856. His speech on the issue of slavery was delivered on the third floor known as Templar Hall. The cost of admission was 25 cents with all proceeds going to the support of the Underground Railroad. After the Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman spoke in Templar Hall.
