Constructed in 1963 and dedicated on February 8, 1964, the Venice Beach Pavilion has a hyperbolic paraboloid shape, a continuous, flowing, double-curved surface used mainly in concrete skin roofs. It appears wing-like in one elevation and as an arch from the opposite side, and is also referred to as a saddle-shape roof. Its seemingly complex geometry is relatively simple, and its construction depends largely on repeating straight lines and strands. With minimum ground supports, this dynamic roof geometry appears to defy gravity, while embodying symbolic elements of open views, the wind, and the gulf waves. William Lindh served as engineer, Cyril Tucker as architect, Smyth D. Brohard as mayor, Blanche J. Celli as city council president, and the building committee included David Hamilton as chairman, John R. Hogan, William Lindh, Paul A. Youngberg, and Guy E. Curwood as director of public works.
