In the Civil War, students and faculty of Millersville State Normal School served their nation, and the memorial honors the brave loyal Normal boys who were among the three hundred thousand who perished in the struggle to crush the Rebellion from 1861 to 1865. Those named are Capt. A. J. Stevens, D. R. Bare, Serg. A. McFarlan, J. K. Lewis, A.N. McClurg, B.H. Roberts, Lieut. B. F. Hibbs, Aaron Baker, J. B. Kling, J. R. Courtney, T. S. Herr, John Taylor, A. M. Roth, Serg. G. S. Hambleton, J. S. Walter, Capt. Oliver Mumford, Channing Brinton, L. M. Groff, J. J. Jackson, ADGT D. L. Sanders, M. H. Pinkerton, Capt. H. G. Durnall, George Knee, Robert Holmes, R. J. Maxwell, Elijah Brittinger, Lieut. W. F. Roberts, Capt. W. D. Roberts, Serg. J. T. Hunter, Serg. E. Siverd, and E. R. Buckman. The battles associated here are Bull Run, Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Chaplin Hills, Mechanicsburg, and Chickamauga. The memorial was dedicated November 1, 1867, and rededicated November 11, 2002.
