Cleghorn Lakes Wilderness is a 39,167-acre protected area in California’s southern Mojave Desert, northeast of Twentynine Palms and north of Joshua Tree National Park. Named for its central dry lakes, it includes sharply varied terrain, from broad alluvial fans and bajadas on the west to the rugged Bullion Mountains on the east, rising from about 1,400 to more than 4,100 feet. This relatively undeveloped landscape supports Mojave species such as desert bighorn sheep, desert tortoise, barrel cactus, and smoke trees, while the dry lakes sometimes produce spring wildflowers. Its protection preserves a remote and representative stretch of Mojave habitat with striking contrasts in landforms and plant life.
