Como Park Zoo and Conservatory anchors one of Saint Paul’s most important public landscapes within Como Park, a public park established in 1873 around Como Lake. The zoo began in 1897 with three donated deer and grew into a municipal collection, with major development in the 1930s through Works Progress Administration construction and further expansion in the 1980s and after. The conservatory opened in 1915 and became known for its Palm Dome, seasonal flower shows, and specialized plant displays. Together with historic bridges, a restored carousel, public art, and the Japanese Garden honoring friendship with Nagasaki, the complex blends recreation, architecture, and civic identity.
