Little Maquoketa River Mounds State Preserve in Sageville, Iowa, is a 42-acre archaeological and natural area on a limestone ridge above the Little Maquoketa River near the Upper Mississippi. Its central feature is a fenced 3-acre burial ground with 32 mounds associated with the Late Woodland culture, dating from about AD 700 to 1200. The preserve was created with significant consultation with Native American tribes, reflecting the site’s cultural sensitivity. Bought by the Iowa Department of Transportation in 1977 and designated a state archaeological and geological preserve in 1981, it is maintained by the Dubuque County Conservation Board and also includes forest, blufftop prairie, and hiking access.
