In 2013, Rockwell City secured the Calhoun County Freedom Rock through an application submitted by Rockwell City Chamber and Development with a $1000 deposit, followed by confirmation from Sorensen Studios that the city would host it. Bill and Janet Anderson donated the rock to serve as a pallet, and the Calhoun County Board of Supervisors approved donation of land at the northwest corner of the courthouse square as its home. Volunteers moved the rock from the Andersons' yard to the courthouse square in September 2013. In 2014, plans for a Veteran Memorial Park were rendered, a retaining wall was built around the rock, and Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II began painting it on August 18, completing it on August 22. In 2015, memorial paving stones and benches arrived to be placed around the Freedom Rock Veteran Memorial Park, and on November 11, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds dedicated the Calhoun County Freedom Rock on Veterans Day. The work was part of Sorensen's larger Freedom Rock project, which began in 1999 after watching Saving Private Ryan inspired him to paint a patriotic mural on a graffiti-covered boulder near his southwest Iowa home to honor veterans, a project that grew into a full-time effort aimed at placing a freedom rock in each of Iowa's 99 counties.
