USS San Jose was a Mars-class combat stores ship acquired by the U.S. Navy in 1970. She served until November 1993 and took part in the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf War before transfer to the Military Sealift Command and redesignation as USNS San Jose (T-AFS 7). In that role, she was involved in the INTERFET peacekeeping taskforce, the response to the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq before deactivation in 2010. The ship received three battle stars for Consolidation I, Consolidation II, and Vietnam Ceasefire. The first twin Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun was produced in January 1942, and such guns spread across the fleet, though demand was not met until mid-1944. Each twin 40mm fired 120-160 rounds per minute per barrel with an approximate effective range of 4,000 yards, and each gun was manned by seven men, with ammunition passers added as required: a gun captain, pointer, trainer, two first loaders, and two second loaders.
