Wave Hill is a 28-acre public garden and cultural center in Riverdale, Bronx, overlooking the Hudson River and the New Jersey Palisades. Developed from a nineteenth-century country estate, it grew through owners including William Lewis Morris, William Henry Appleton, and George Walbridge Perkins, with additions such as Wave Hill House, Glyndor, gardens, and greenhouses. The property was associated with visitors and residents including Thomas Henry Huxley, the Theodore Roosevelt family, Mark Twain, Bashford Dean, and Arturo Toscanini. Given to New York City in 1960, it became a public institution known for its gardens, woodland, art exhibitions, educational programs, historic buildings, and landmark status.
