The hexagonal screwpile cottage-style light station off Thomas Point was lit in 1875, replacing an earlier tower on the shore. In 1914, the US Lighthouse Service noted that Thomas Point Shoal's fog bell sounded a triple stroke every 30 seconds using its pneumatic striker. The only remaining Chesapeake screwpile lighthouse in its original location, the Thomas Point Shoal lighthouse is a Chesapeake icon.
