Blue Hill Bay Light on Green Island in Blue Hill Bay, Maine, was first established in 1857 as a navigational aid and became widely associated with the bay’s waters under names including Sand Island Light and Eggemoggin Light. Its history is unusual because the active light is a skeletal tower built in 1935, while the original 1857 white cylindrical tower attached to a keeper’s residence still stands nearby, preserving the earlier station’s appearance. The lighthouse was maintained by a succession of keepers, among them Moses T. Graves, Isaac Smith, John Staples, Edward K. Tapley, and Justin A. Foss. In 2018, the lighthouse and cottage were purchased with Green Island and its associated land.
