Moving south about 3 miles east, the Twentieth Federal Corps under McCook was stopped at Liberty Gap, 6 miles southeast, by the 5th and 15th Arkansas Infantry of Liddell's Brigade, later reinforced by Cleburne's Division. With its 1st division under Jeff C. Davis and 2nd division under R.W. Johnson heavily engaged, the Twentieth Corps sideslipped east to Hoover's Gap and marched from there to Manchester.
