Thomas Jefferson Chambers served as Surveyor General of Texas in 1829 and as the sole superior judge of Texas before 1836. He was active in the cause of independence and was a member of the Secession Convention in 1861. Chambersea, later Anahuac, and a Texas county were named in his honor.
