George “Jimmy” Green Circle honors Sub-Lieutenant George “Jimmy” Green of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve and the service and contribution of the Allied Navy in support of the Normandy landing and Operation Overlord. Like most Allied Navy personnel in World War II, Green was a citizen-sailor. Drawn to the sea from boyhood, he entered active service early in the war and, while billeted aboard Destroyer HMS Bulldog as a common seaman, took part in the capture of U-110 on 9 May 1941, including the boarding of the U-Boat and the seizure of surviving crew members, equipment, an Enigma Cipher machine with the 9 May settings still on its rotors, and several code books. About three years later, at 0400 hours on 6 June 1944, he commanded the first six landing craft of the 551st Assault Flotilla, launched from HMS Empire Javelin into heavy seas with Company A, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division aboard, and was charged with delivering the soldiers to Omaha Beach by 0630, H-Hour. He accomplished that mission, though one damaged landing craft foundered 1,000 yards from shore, and as the last man debarked he broke radio silence to report, “We’ve landed on time, against opposition.”
