Fair Housing In The Suburbs
Silver Spring, Maryland
History
7
On June 9, 1966, nine civil rights demonstrators walked onto I-495 in an act of civil disobedience. Attorney C. Charles Jones led the three-day, 64-mile march around the beltway to protest the lack of rental housing for African Americans in the DC suburbs. This demonstration showed solidarity with protests then being led by Martin Luther King and others during the civil rights movement.
