Washington Confederate Cemetery holds Confederate dead from the Maryland Campaign of 1862. It was incorporated by Chapter 213, Act of General Assembly of Maryland, approved April 4, 1870, dedicated June 12, 1877, with speaker Maj. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee, CSA, and rededicated September 3, 1961, with speaker Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. Burials include 2,122 unknowns, estimated, including 16 burials since 1888, and 346 known, including Lt. Col. Samuel P. Lumpkin, 44 GA Inf. An original map was made by Jos. G. Coxson in 1888.
