During the segregation era, this beach was designated as the exclusively African American section of beach in Atlantic City. Its nickname, Chicken Bone Beach, came from visitors bringing baskets of fried chicken to the beach. The beach attracted popular black entertainers, local residents, and tourists. With the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, all Atlantic City beaches were open to everyone.
