Fort Boggy State Park in Leon County, between Leona and Centerville, opened in 2001 on land donated in 1985 by Eileen Crain Sullivan to become a public park. Its name recalls nearby Fort Boggy, a palisade built in 1840 by settlers for protection during frontier conflict, though the park lies near rather than on the original site. The 1,847-acre park centers on 15-acre Sullivan Lake, which supports swimming, paddling, fishing, and a tackle loaner program. It also preserves a varied East-Central Texas landscape of woodlands, meadows, wetlands, and grasslands that support native wildlife and the endangered Centerville brazos-mint.
