Joseph J. Foss, a USD ’39 graduate, served as a U.S. Marine pilot in the Pacific during World War II, shot down 23 enemy aircraft, and returned home to be elected governor of South Dakota. He later became the first commissioner of the American Football League, served as president of the National Rifle Association, and held various other leadership roles.
