Iowa honored all of its soldiers who took part in the Battles of Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, and Ringgold, declaring that their sacrifice should be remembered through citizenship worthy of the reunited and glorious Union they helped preserve. In the final contest for Missionary Ridge, four Iowa regiments were engaged on the Confederate right flank, while six others with a battery moved from Rossville against the Confederate left and rear past this position, a movement that ended in the assault upon the ridge and, two days afterward, in the battle of Ringgold, Georgia. Iowa expressed pride, homage, and gratitude for these achievements and named the officers of the units present: Lieutenant Colonel George Burton of the 4th Infantry, Lieutenant James M. Williams of the 1st Battery, Lieutenant Colonel Jeremiah W. Jenkins of the 31st Infantry, Lieutenant Colonel Aurelius Roberts of the 30th Infantry, Colonel Milo Smith of the 26th Infantry, Colonel George A. Stone of the 25th Infantry, Colonel Clark R. Wever of the 17th Infantry, Lieutenant Colonel P.P. Henderson of the 10th Infantry, Colonel David Carskaddon of the 8th Infantry, Lieutenant Colonel A.J. Miller of the 6th Infantry, and Colonel Jabez Banbury of the 5th Infantry.
