South Carolina was formed in 1712 from part of Carolina, which was chartered in 1663, and was first settled by the English in 1670; it became one of the 13 original states. North Carolina was colonized in 1585-87 by the first English settlers in America, was permanently settled about 1650, and was the first to vote readiness for independence on Apr. 12, 1776.
