Founded in 1987 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, by William and Joffa Kerr and friends, the National Museum of Wildlife Art grew from the Kerrs’ collection and moved in 1994 to its current Idaho quartzite building on East Gros Ventre Butte overlooking the National Elk Refuge. Inspired in part by Slains Castle, the museum includes galleries, a library, and a public Sculpture Trail. Its collection emphasizes traditional and contemporary realist wildlife art, especially works by Carl Rungius and Bob Kuhn, and by 2012 held more than 5,000 artworks by 550 artists. It also serves education and research, and in 2008 received federal recognition as the National Museum of Wildlife Art of the United States.
