Bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer, and white-tailed deer graze in this area depending on the season, with most spending summer higher above the river and moving to lower, snow-free pastures in winter. Osprey and songbirds are present in summer, while bald eagles and waterfowl such as the common goldeneye can be seen year round. Dippers and kingfishers hunt these waters in every season as well. Bald eagles live along the river, raising their young in huge stick nests high in the trees during spring and summer, and in winter they hunt fish where the water is ice-free, snatch ducks, and feed on carrion. Bighorn sheep clamber on the cliffs across the river, may appear in the field below the cliffs in winter, and retreat to higher, more secluded elevations for lambing in late spring. Kingfishers fly above the river, and when one spots a fish, it hovers briefly, then dives and usually emerges with a flapping fish in its beak.
