U.S. 501 from Galivants Ferry to Conway was named in 1979 in honor of Joseph William Holliday, a leader in the Naval Stores Industry and Commissioner of Horry County, elected in 1870, who was born in 1827 and died in 1904; George Judson Holliday, a planter, merchant, and State Senator from 1903 to 1908, who was born in 1875 and died in 1941; and other members of the family for their contributions to the civic, business, and political life of Horry County and South Carolina's Great Pee Dee Region.
