The impressive Fort Smith courthouse was created as a building front and entryway for the movie and stood where this building now stands. Interior scenes were filmed 10 miles south of Ridgway at the Ouray County Courthouse. John Wayne won his only Academy Award for True Grit, filmed in 1968. Ridgway sites were the Railroad Depot, Gallows, Livery Stable, Undertaker and Chen Lee's Place, Courthouse Facade, True Grit Cafe, and Saloon and Grocery, Jail Wagon. Ouray sites were the Ouray County Courthouse and Outlaw Restaurant. The sites appear in the movie in this order: 8, 1, 2, 4, 6, 10, 9, 5, 3.
