Known to Native peoples as Tomanowos, the Willamette Meteorite is a sacred iron-nickel meteorite associated with Oregon’s Willamette Valley and the largest found in the United States. Geologists believe it did not fall where it was discovered, but was carried south from what is now Montana or western Canada by ice and floodwaters near the end of the last Ice Age. Euro-American awareness began in 1902, followed by removal, a court fight, sale, and its transfer to the American Museum of Natural History, where it has been displayed since 1906. Its scientific importance, Indigenous spiritual meaning, and contested ownership have made it internationally significant.
