Sepulcher Mountain is a 9,642-foot peak in northwestern Yellowstone National Park, about halfway between Electric Peak and Mammoth Hot Springs and overlooking the park’s northern district near Gardiner, Montana. Its name came in 1871 from U.S. Army Captain John W. Barlow, who thought its profile resembled a crypt when viewed from Gardiner. That naming reflects the early surveying and military presence around Yellowstone near the time of the park’s establishment. Considered a moderate summit, it can be reached by a 7.2-mile trail beginning at the mouth of Clematis Creek near Mammoth Hot Springs, and it remains part of the mountain setting at Yellowstone’s northern entrance.
