Laughing Whitefish Falls State Park in western Alger County, Michigan, protects 960 acres along the Laughing Whitefish River within the Escanaba River State Forest. Its centerpiece is Laughing Whitefish Falls, a 100-foot, fan-shaped waterfall formed where the river drops over an abrupt limestone escarpment on its way north to Lake Superior. The escarpment spreads the water into a broad wall, giving the falls their distinctive appearance. About eight miles south of Lake Superior, the park is designed for scenic visits and hiking, with a half-mile walk through beech-maple forest to the falls, three observation decks, picnicking areas, and roughly 2.5 miles of trails connected to the North Country Trail.
