Historic Blakeley State Park preserves the site of the former town of Blakeley on the Tensaw River delta in Baldwin County, Alabama, where layers of history include an ancient Native American village, a plantation, and a once-thriving river community. It is most closely associated with the Battle of Fort Blakeley, one of the last major engagements of the U.S. Civil War, involving more than 16,000 soldiers and a significant number of African-American Union troops. Created through preservation efforts beginning in 1976 and designated a state park in 1981, the park retains battlefield earthworks and other historic features while also serving as a place for camping, hiking, and delta excursions.
