North Bloomfield Drain Tunnel
Science & Tech
1
The North Bloomfield drain tunnel was one of the great engineering feats in Nevada County hydraulic mining history. Engineered by Hamilton Smith, the 7,874-foot drain tunnel ran nearly 200 feet below this point, and eight vertical shafts of up to 200 feet in depth intersected the long tunnel. The project began in April 1872 and took 30 months to complete.
