From 1861 to 1865, Lancaster County's Confederate soldiers were honored for defending the honor of the South, the rights of the States, the liberties of the people, the sentiments of the South, and the principles of the Union as they believed these had been handed down by the fathers of their common country. They were praised as loyal sons, noble champions, bold defenders, and true martyrs, and in 1909 the women of Lancaster County erected this tribute under the auspices of the Lancaster Chapter U.D.C., affirming that the South would stand the verdict of justice without shame.
