This chapel is a reproduction based on St. Francis Catholic Church in Point Coupee (1760) and St Martin de Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville (1773), whose double pitch roofs were characteristic of Creole-style architecture. During Louisiana's colonial period, the Catholic Church was the only church recognized by the French and Spanish, and the large majority of immigrants from Acadia, Spain, France, and Germany were Catholic, giving the region a stronger Catholic culture and faith than neighboring majority Protestant regions. The Code Noir, which regulated slavery, required enslaved persons to be baptized in the Catholic Church, yet in local churches free persons of color and enslaved persons sat separately from white parishioners. Mardi Gras and All-Saints Day were traditions brought by the earliest French and Spanish immigrants. Le Courir de Mardi Gras, with origins in the European Medieval period, is a tradition in which people in colorful homemade costumes travel from farm to farm on horseback in a ritual to beg for money, chickens, or other ingredients to make a gumbo. On All-Saints Day, November 1st, families clean and adorn their ancestors' graves to honor their memories. Although Catholicism was considered the official denomination in the colony, other religions were practiced clandestinely or in private. Enslaved Africans especially developed their own variations of Catholic worship, and those born in Africa integrated their spiritual beliefs with Catholic beliefs. Voodoo emerged as a syncretic blending of African spiritual and Catholic faiths, as enslaved Africans saw similarities between Catholic saints and orishas, the African spirits who carry prayers to God, so some attended Catholic church publicly while conducting voodoo ceremonies and rituals in private.
